Filming one-way videos at home
9 clever tips for video interviews.
Tip 1
Phone or camera should be in landscape mode. If possible, film with your back camera (not in selfie mode).
Tip 2
Place yourself in a quiet corner of your house, but well-lit (if possible, natural light). Close any windows and turn off devices that might make noise.
Tip 3
It's best to film yourself sitting down.
If you have someone to help: this person can press record for you, and ask the questions which will help you reply, as if you’re having a conversation.
Tip 4
If you are alone: put the phone on a shelf at the right height (chest level and up). Don’t hesitate to read the question out loud and mark a pause before answering.
Tip 5
Do not stand too far from the phone/camera, so you will have the best sound possible.
Do not hesitate to speak louder than usual and enunciate.
Tip 6
Do not sit with your back to a window, as this will make the video backlit.
Also, make sure your video is not over-exposed as well.
Tip 7
Follow the framing above
Ideally, you should put your phone on a tripod or a static place (like a shelf). Avoid having people film, the video might be a bit shaky.
Tip 8
Follow the timeframes set
Ideally, no answer should be more than 3 mins long. Don’t hesitate to be short and precise in your answers.
Tip 9
10 Second Breaks
Wait 10 seconds in silence before attempting the next question.
Tip 10
Playback
Make sure you review your work before submitting to your prospective employer and ensure you are demonstrating positive body language.
