Once you’ve chosen which resume format to use, it’s time to get started on your content. A good resume tells a comprehensive and cohesive story about you. When a potential employer can connect the dots between your academic and professional backgrounds, and how its shaped who you are today… this helps them determine how you’re the best candidate for a particular position, and helps you stand out from the rest.
Dos
- Do have your resume proofread (ideally, by 3-4 people you trust).Do mention the reason for leaving, if you were at a job for less than 3-6 months, especially if you left for reasons beyond your control (i.e., redundancy, the company went bankrupt etc).Do highlight your strongest skills. Your key responsibilities should be in order of priority, from what is most prominent in your role to least.Do emphasise which of your skills most align with the position you’re applying for (for example, if you are moving from a 100% functional role into a management role, emphasise your leadership skills from previous jobs, rather than your less relevant technical skills).Do tailor your resume for every single job.Do consider your audience and address all the requirements in the job description.Do put in all the keywords from the job description (the first “reader” may very well be AI looking to match resumes with requirements).
Don'ts
- Don’t lead with your education, unless you graduated within the past year.Don’t list every job you’ve ever had or everything you ever did especially if you have more than 5-7 previous employers (be selective in what you’re presenting). However, don’t leave significant gaps in your work history.Don’t assume they will read between the lines, be specific and to the point.
