Tips for acing a virtual interview

7 great tips to help you help you score that job.

Tip 1

WEEK BEFORE INTERVIEW – Do Your Research

Take time to research the company’s website and any articles or news. Write down your key facts and figures, intriguing initiatives or accolades. This will demonstrate you have done your homework and will leave a good impression. You can write these on post-it notes and place around your screen, this will avoid shuffling or clicking around during your interview.

Tip 2

DAY BEFORE INTERVIEW - Assess Your Technology

Employers consider technical skills as one of the top competencies when recruiting a new hire. Don’t get caught out, test your technology! Check that your charger works, check for potential glitches, grainy visuals or muffled audio, check for secure internet connection and any software updates required. Practice the share screen function should you need to demonstrate a presentation, photos, work samples etc.

Tip 3

2 HOURS BEFORE INTERVIEW – Assess Your Space

Set up a space that is as business-like as possible. Ensure the area is clutter free so there are no distractions, and the focus is on YOU. Check your lighting, sitting next to a window works best but not with your back to the window.

Tip 4

1 HOUR BEFORE INTERVIEW – Dress Professionally

Even though technically you could get away with just wearing a nice blouse or shirt, it’s important to get completely dressed to feel the part while interviewing and you just never know what might happen making you have to stand up! Avoid over-powering patterns or flashy accessories so again the focus is on you and not your wardrobe.

Tip 5

20 MINUTES BEFORE INTERVIEW – Rid Yourself of Distractions

Doing a virtual interview comes with a range of potential distractions that you wouldn't normally have when you interview at a company office/site. Be sure to eliminate any potential distractions, turn the tv off, put your phone on silent, close any windows etc.

Tip 6

ACTION TIME – Body Language

Conveying confidence through a firm handshake isn’t possible, so make sure you convey through body language. Sit up straight, keep the camera at eye level to avoid looking up or down. The beauty of looking at the camera rather than the hiring manager is that it is less intimidating. When speaking make sure it is at a pace that others can follow. Technology can be glitchy so check that others can hear you. The upside of speaking slower also buys you more time to think about what you are saying and don’t forget to add tone and expression. Make sure YOU do YOU well, try not to be to be too rehearsed and be genuine. When you are being yourself this comes across in a way that the hiring manager can sense your words, actions and emotions in an authentic way.

Tip 7

2+ DAYS AFTER YOUR INTERVIEW – Follow Up

There is nothing wrong with sending a follow up email to whom you chatted with, thanking her/him for their time to speak with you, how you enjoyed the interview and that you look forward to hearing about the position soon. If there was a question you wish you had asked now is your chance but keep your email concise.

Stay confident, keep working hard and just know – YOU GOT THIS!
